The Midnight Sun Road

It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters in the end  (Ursula LeGuin)

A few decades ago a number of municipalities between Piteå and Nordkapp ran a project called “Midnattsolvägen” the Midnight Sun Road. As many other similar tourist projects it did not continue beyond government support.

Midnight Sun RoadLast year, Angelo Giammerresi and I traveled the road to document some diamonds along it. We made stops at the less obvious gems and it became a fantastic journey.

Starting at the UNESCO church town in Gammelstad and the Riviera of the North in Piteå, the Midnight Sun Road is stuffed with goodies for most travelers. How about learning how to make barbecue coal?

Other highlights: A plant is not just a plant in Jokkmokk, an industry achievement of Olympic proportions at the power plant in Porjus, the Saami church and the “iron man” in Kiruna, the Moose in Vittangi, and the petrol station with almost everything in Karesuando. We are not going to mention all highlights in this post, they will be posted one by one by the end of March 2013.

At the end of the road you find the North Cape plateau where you look northwest at Knivskjelodden, the real northernmost point, the very top hiking destinations in continental Europe.

ø Question:

What is your favorite place along the Midnight Sun Road?
