Gällivare is featuring its position as one of the major mining towns in Europe. It is a high tech town and a communication hub for northern Sweden. And it is close to some of the best outdoorsy area of Norrbotten.
The town has now some of the most modern hotel facilities in the Arctic. It has just renovated the renowned hotel for SEK 220 million. Grand Hotel Lapland has now become Quality Resort of Lapland.
The hotel director Ms. Thea Rantapää is very happy about the expansion of the hotel and its services. It has become a destination in itself. We have a new ventilation system and a total of 174 rooms. Many enhancements have been made in the rooms and we now have four suites.
The resort is just a few meters from the train station and the tourist information. From the tourist information there is daily Midnight Sun Excursion to Dundret in the proper season. There are excursions every day to the mines of LKAB, and to the copper mines of New Boliden Aitik three times a week. The alpine skiing opportunity at Dundret is famous, along with other skiing possibilities in the winter.
After a day of activities outside the hotel there are now plenty of options inside the hotel. For one, the hotel has two restaurants, one with 200 and the other with 500 seats. The 200 seat restaurant is a steakhouse where we are serving norrlandske specialties, says Thea. We can now accommodate and feed bigger events that will, hopefully, boost the reputation of Gällivare as a travel destination.
The hotel has night life opportunities in a pub. It also has a sky bar on top of the building where there is a swimming pool. The hotel also has Jacuzzis and a spa. Five saunas can heat up your stay, and the sauna with a panoramic view is highly recommendable. It is also in line with the times that the resort has its own gym. In the basement there is a bowling alley with eight lanes.
For kids there is a little play land.
This is a state-of-the-art resort for most people in the middle of the Arctic.
